인생찬가 - H.W롱펠로우

 

 

 

오래전 친구가 송년모임에서 들려주었던

시 한편을 늘 기억하기위해
메모를 해둔 일이있다.

 

그리고 수년째 연말이면
아니 농사지을 때 수시로 꺼내보고
이따금 읊조려 보며
인생이란 과연 무엇인가를
생각해 보곤 한다. 

"인생찬가" - H.W 롱펠로우

 

슬픈사연으로 내게 말하지마라,
인생은 한낱 허황된 꿈에 지나지 않는다고-
잠자는 영혼은 죽음이고
만물의 본체는 외양대로만은 아니다.

인생은 실재! 인생은 진지한 것!
무덤이 그 목표는 아니다.
너는 본래 흙이니, 흙으로 돌아가리라,
이는 영혼을 두고 한말은 아니었다.

우리가 가야 할 곳, 혹은 가는 길은
향락이 아니고 슬픔도 아니며,
내일의 하루 하루가 오늘보다 낫도록
행동하는 것.

예술은 길고 세월은 쏜살같다.
우리 심장은 튼튼하고, 무덤을 향해
마치 감싸진 북과 같이, 무덤을 향해
장송곡을 계속 울린다.

이 세상 넓은 싸움터에서,
인생의 노영 안에서,
말 못하고 쫓기는 짐승이 되지 말고,
싸움터에 나선 영웅이 되거라!

아무리 즐거울지라도 <미래>를 믿지 마라!
죽은 <과거>로 하여금 그 죽음을 묻게 하라!
활동하라- 산<현재>에 활동하라!
가슴 속에는 심장이 있고, 머리 위에는 신이 있다!

위인들의 모든 생애는 말해 주노니,
우리도 장엄한 삶을 이룰 수 있고,
이 세상 떠날 때는 시간의 모래 위에
우리 발자국을 남길 수 있음을.

아마도 후일에 다른 사람이,
장엄한 삶의 바다를 항해하다가,
외롭게 난파한 그 어떤 형제가 보고
다시금 용기를 얻게 될 발자국을.
그러니 우리 이제 일어나서 일하자,
어떠한 운명도 이겨낼 정신을 가지고.
끊임없이 성취하고 추구하면서,
일하고 기다리기를 함께 배우자.

A PSALM OF LIFE

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dreams!-
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us further than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our heats, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,- act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailling o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
